Goals of mobilestudy
The goal of mobile study is to make it easier to study on the move.
Our site provides both educators and students an easy way to create revision
material that can be reviewed on a mobile/cell phone.
How much does it cost to download a quiz?
Whilst we don't charge anything for the quizzes, mobile phone service providers will
charge for the amount of data downloaded when downloading a quiz. A normal mobilestudy quiz is
approximately 16kb so if your service provider is charging 1 cent a kilobyte you
will incur a 16 cent expense on your mobile bill.
Please note:
* A lot of phone plans these days include a certain amount of data download for free.
* You can download the phone quiz to your computer then upload it to your phone via
bluetooth, infrared or a data cable and completely avoid any cost to your cell/mobile phone bill.
The bluetooth/ifrared or data cable option may be a very convenient way of getting the quiz onto student's phones if they are concerned about data cost.
What are some ways I can use mobilestudy?
There are two broad ways to use our website:
Create revision material for use outside the classroom.
Create a quiz as a learning activity as either a class, a small group or as
an individual.
Create revision material for use outside the classroom.
Tip 1: Trains, planes and automobiles.
One of the goals of mobilestudy.org is to make it easy for people to
revise and learn on public transport. The size of a mobile/cell phone
overcomes a lot of the physical barriers normally faced when trying to
study on the move.
Tip 2: Learn a second language.
Mobile study quizzes support multiple languages so it can be used as a language
learning aid. Create the same quiz in a student's native language and then a
second language and get them to sit them one after the other.
Tip 3: Math quizzes
Mobile quizzes are a great way for students to revise order of operation and
basic algebra. Adding an explanation of the correct answer is especially useful
with math based quizzes as it provide direct feedback. This is also a lot more
convenient for the student as they don't have to keep flicking back and forth
between pages to check their answers in the back of the text book.
Tip 4: Remote Students
The mobile study website and phone quizzes provide a unique way of getting students
in remote location or studying by correspondence involved with their teachers and
fellow class mates.
Create a quiz as a learning activity
Tip 1: Let the students create a quiz as a way to learn.
Creating a quiz about a subject gives students a unique perspective on
how well they know the material. Coming up with questions to cover the
main areas of study can help refine their understanding and often highlights
areas they know well and not so well. Providing the answers for multiple
choice question gets them thinking about common mistakes people make and
pitfalls to avoid.
Thinking about what order to ask the questions often helps them understand
how concepts link together.
Tip 2: Create a group quiz
With younger children creating a quiz as a group can be a novel and fun way
of getting them to share their knowledge and allows a teacher to gain an
understanding of what they do and don't comprehend.
Older children may enjoy creating quizzes in smaller groups so they can try
their quizzes out on other groups in their class.
There are many ways to utilize mobilestudy in a classroom or for private study.
If you find an effective way of studying with mobilestudy feel free to drop us a line
or leave a comment.
Can I link to my quiz from another site?
We would hope over time a teacher/lecturer might build up a collection of quizzes
for a specific subject which all can be linked to from their subject's website.
Alternatively you can just link to your mobilestudy homepage where your quizzes
reside.
Do I have to enter the "SMS Results To:" field?
No, this field is optional, only fields that have * on them are required.
The "SMS Results To:" is the phone number you wish the quiz to send the results to.
Normally this would be a teacher.
How do I get the quiz onto my phone?
There are three ways to achieve this:
Navigate to the address (URL) for your quiz using your phone's browser
(i.e type the address in or use the SMS service to send the URL to your phone)
Scan the QRCode and the url will appear on your phone.
Download the jad and jar file to your computer then upload to your
phone via bluetooth, infrared or a data cable.
Click the Install on phone menu item to the left of the screen.
Click on the "Install the quiz on a mobile phone using QR Code"
A Black and White Image will appear.
With your QRCode reader focus the phone's camera on the image until it locks on.
Take a photo of the image. The URL will now appear in your QRCode Reader.
Select the URL and the quiz will start downloading.
Why do some of the image quizzes not run on old phones?
Some old phones have a size restriction on them of 64kb. If you try and run
a quiz with a lot of hi-res images in it, it will probably exceed this limit.
The size of the quiz is listed next to the download link.
